Board Happenings -By Dave Lantz, President

Arizona law requires that HOA Board Meetings be open to all members of the Association. This particular Board works with a bit more autonomy than some so items to be researched are generally researched before the meeting. As a result, we do not usually take a lot of time in debate. The result is a short meeting and declining attendance. Come on out -- it's more fun for the Board when there are people in the pews. Also, we need and desire some instant feedback.

At the meeting of March 17, the Board authorized the abandonment of the south two shuffleboards and modification to allow use of those areas to expand the available space for the many parties that seem to be cropping up.

One of the perks available to the Board president is the opportunity (?) to provide wise counsel to the members via this column. It is a bit repetitive to give a monthly report that all is quiet and well so I am reminded of a conversation with a renowned Professor of Electrical Engineering at a major Midwest university -- one of those publish or perish places. His field of specialty was transmission lines, which are really more complicated than they look. Every year he wrote and delivered a paper at the annual Electrical Engineers convention in New York in January. There were two topics, each readily grasped by sophomore students but not really yielding to solution until about the senior year because they required a thorough understanding of the basics and also excellent math training. This was pre-computer but I did solve my one try with an analog approach.

The two topics were electrostatic and electromagnetic imbalances on power lines. With all due respect to the professor, these imbalances can be quite troublesome if not compensated. One year his paper would be on electrostatic imbalance and the next year would cover electromagnetic imbalance, then back to electrostatic etc. No original research was ever conducted. Evidently, his Dean never researched the quality of his work, only the quantity. Eventually, he moved to another University but only after confessing to my boss that he didn't mind rewriting his work every year but he was running out of titles.

See you at the Board meeting on April 21.

Common Area Maintenance -By Tom Cooke, Chair

Things are pretty much on an even keel in the common areas. We have been able to handle requests for services on a timely basis so far without difficulty, as well as keep up with the regular maintenance.

Presently, the biggest ongoing effort is weed control. Much of the subdivision has been sprayed but more remains to be done. Recently, quite a number of windy days have interfered with the program, but it will continue as conditions permit. With over 20 acres of common areas, it takes awhile to cover all of it. We ask for the help of individual owners in keeping the weeds in their own yards in check.

A general cleanup of the Esperanza Estates Park has been completed, including the removal of a number of dead and dying barrel cacti. The Park now looks very attractive.

The ants are starting to make their annual appearance. Last year they caused us a lot of problems in the common areas by the creation of their unsightly mounds. This year we want to begin an eradication program as early as possible. It will be helpful if Esperanza Estates residents report any ant hills to me as soon as they are observed, so they can be treated promptly.

As always, if you have or observe problems in the common areas, please give me a call at 399-0455. We will do our best to get them handled promptly.

Neighborhood Watch

Due to a death in the family, Melodye Cooke has been away from the area and is unable to make a report for this issue. A full report will appear in the next Periodico

Ladies Luncheon -By Phyllis Griggs, Chair

A reminder to the ladies who have luncheon reservations do not forget that important date of April 2 at Rex Ranch.

The Volunteers of Esperanza Estates -By Tess Ewing

The finishing of the storage-serving cabinets under the Ramada was a real team effort. Paul Rowland, Lance Ewing, and Vince Brow cut and hung the doors. Lance painted the outside and Bev Brow the inside (with paint provided by Dick Zindrick). Paul completed the plumbing to the sink and Bev and Vince sealed the tile grout. The cabinets look great and were much appreciated during the recent St. Patrick's Party.

We've had more donations: Two wrought iron (wall) light fixtures (to replace old ones under the Ramada) by Ben and Mona Sheffield.

We have two "bargain" items for sale (from a recent Volunteers Garage Sale): 1. Comer Sewing Table (with two drawers) 2. Metal File Cabinet with "drop" desk top. To view, call 625- 7353

Pool Notes -By Scottie Blum, Chair

A reminder: Everyone using the swimming pool must shower before entering the pool or hot tub as the oils we use are very hard on pumps and such. At the Board meeting of March 17th, the Board voted to extend children swimming time for the summer months from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This will take effect in April. Morning hours will stay the same. Please, when you use the lounges and move them around to different areas, it would be helpful if you return them back to the area they belong. As our winter guests start heading home I could sure use some help testing the chemicals (water must be tested twice daily). If there is anyone who would like to help, please call me at 399-0955. Currently there are only two people, other than myself, caring for the testing. See you at the pool or around the tennis court.

ESPERANZA ESTATES 1st ANNUAL HOME TOUR

Sunday, March 30, 2003, 1:00-4:00

(Come to the pool for your maps and brochures) Cost: $7.50

Includes wine and cheese party at the pool from 3:30 to 5:00

The 1st Annual Esperanza Estates Tour of Homes will feature 8 homes presenting various models ranging from original design to modified structures and innovative decorating concepts. These lovely homes will provide you with stimulating ideas for both interior and exterior design.

The following homes are included on the tour:

1. William and Dagmar Duncan

2. Horace Hicks

3. Ben and Mona Sheffield

4. James and Margaret Teale

5. Shura Wallin/Richard Ramirez

6. Frederick and "Scottie" Blum

7. Ezella Struble

8. Judith Badgley

Ticket sales have already exceeded any expectations. We may very well have over a hundred residents taking the tour. In order to ensure that everyone have sufficient opportunity to visit each of the eight homes on the tour, and in an effort to eliminate confusion, the tour will be conducted as follows:

1) Those taking the tour should meet at the pool area at 1:00 P.M. sharp. The tour is from 1 P.M. until 3:30. P.M., followed by a Wine and Cheese Party at the starting area.

2) You will be divided into eight groups. Each individual group will be sent to a different home. The groups will then tour the remaining homes in numerical sequence. Maps will be provided with the eight homes identified and numbered.

3) Each group will have a "Captain. The Captain will let the others in the group know when 20 minutes has expired and "send" the group to the next home. You will have 20 minutes at each of the 8 homes; and it will take 2 hours and 40 minutes to complete the tour. We have allotted 3 hours for the home tour. The extra 20 minutes will be used to travel between homes.

4) If you have a group of four before the tour, it will help. Groups of two and singles will be matched. We hope to have three cars with four people in each tour group.

5) Your ticket will serve as an entry to the door prize drawing.

All proceeds benefit the Volunteers of Esperanza Estates. For ticket information, contact Sheila Bennen at 399-0501

Hospitality -By Phyllis Johnson-Frost

Our partying at the pool on March 13 was not only a fond send-off to our winter neighbors and the second walking tour with Sheila Bennen, but the initiation of a beautifully tiled counter for our usual food and drink pleasures. The committee is particularly grateful for the storage space which now leaves the shed for the Volunteers. And how about the sink and the microwavel We are grateful to the expert, dedicated builders of the counter area. (See the Volunteer report for details. )

Forty-two participants signed in, Napa scoring the most with Regalo in second place!

Thanks, too, Rod Pearson, for your production of attractive, permanent name tags for our Hospitality committee members.

We remind you to mark your calendars for the next celebration, Cinco de Mayo, sometime in the week of May 5, maybe on the very day.
