de Esperanza President’s Report – By Max Perry I hope everyone is enjoying these last few days of spring before our loooong hotttt summer arrives. Many of us will be traveling during the summer and Association business slows down somewhat. This month's Board meeting was relatively short. Most of the business is reported in reports that follow. We have finally received two estimates on our ramada project and I wish I could say the news was good. But, as with many construction projects underway now, costs are escalating almost daily. We had hoped the total project would cost about $85,000 but now it looks as if the final number may be 20-30% higher. This Friday Ben Sheffield, Tom Cooke and I will meet with our architects, Bill Carnell and Kathi McLaughlin, and a representative of Barker Morrissey Construction to go over the estimate line by line. We are very hopeful that we will be able to pare some of that cost away through clarification of the design, sweat equity or doing some of our own subcontracting. Once we have a firm figure, the Board will meet in Special Session on Saturday, April 29 at noon at the ramada. This is an open meeting and any member is welcome to attend and address the Board before any action is taken. Your Board is committed to this project, but they are also committed to the prudent use of your resources. I encourage anyone interested to attend the meeting and be heard. Our next social event will
be the Cinco de Mayo Mexican
potluck on May 5. We are
going to continue our practice
of bringing a non-perishable
food item to the party to
donate to the Green Valley
Food Bank. This is a good
time to clean off those shelves
and help our less fortunate
Green Valley neighbors. If
you would like to make a
cash donation, that opportunity
will also be available. Let's
make it a point to contact
any of your neighbors who
haven't been attending our
social events and personally
invite them. If you or someone
you know needs transportation
please let one of your Board
members know. We'll take
care of it. See you there! Pretty much all is well in the common areas. The recent small bit of rain has caused some weeds to start sprouting, and we are taking steps to deal with these. Common area ants are being eradicated as we discover their nests. We have lots of routine work underway to try and keep ahead of the spring growth--a never ending task--but things are looking generally satisfactory overall. We ask that all persons having trees in their yards that may overhang a sidewalk or a pathway to try and keep them trimmed and out of the way of pedestrians. We would also like to remind quad owners that the quad yards are common areas, and that no work is allowed in those areas without written permission. This is as provided in the CC&R’s of the subdivision. Permission for any reasonable project in a quad yard is obtainable without much difficulty, but it is imperative that the Board be advised ahead of time. The reason for this is to curtail the type of plantings that will require expensive and regular maintenance in the future.---such as certain types of trees. We have numerous examples in EE of these types of plantings, which have become an ongoing maintenance problem for the Association. For example, each year the Association has to budget about $2,000 to trim palm trees, many if not most of which were planted over the years illegally, in quad yards and elsewhere. We have an interesting Board member in the person of Steve "Stoney" Brown. He has done a great deal of rock work in EE over the past few years, not the least of which has involved outlining much of the EE trail. However, perhaps the most interesting of what he has done is along Arroyo No. 9, where the EE trail system passes by south of Napa. If you have not seen his handiwork, take a walk down that stretch of the trail and take a look. You will amazed at the designs of Steve’s work. There are animals, stick figures, small houses, temples, cairns and just interesting arrangements of all types. Steve has also "adopted" this area, and keeps it looking pretty pristine. We are lucky to have him. As always, if you have or observe problems in the common areas, please call either Ken Miller at 393-1914, or Tom Cooke, 399-0455. Personal Budget Assistance Program Green Valley Assistance Services, in cooperation with Pima Council on Aging and AARP, is now offering a Money Management Program to assist low-income seniors. If you are over 60 years old, and have a limited income, and need help with balancing your checkbook, paying your bills, sorting your mail or determining your monthly income and expenses a Money Management Volunteer can help you. Please contact Barb Hunt at 625-5966 if you or someone you know qualifies and will benefit from this program. Green Valley Interfaith Corps Program Green Valley Interfaith Volunteer Corps is in need of volunteers who are willing to give 2 or 3 hours of their time each week to help provide support services to low-income audits who are home bound, frail or disabled in the Green Valley area. These services include grocery shopping, visiting, light housekeeping and care giver relief. Anyone interested, please call Marilyn Roberts at 625-5966. Thank you for considering our requests. Enhancement Committee – By Bev Brow, Co-Chair The Esperanza Enhancement Committee is asking for donations of clean usable saleable items for our winter annual garage sale. Spring cleaning is a good time to clean out and donate. Without your donations we would not exist and could not be able to beautify our common grounds. Bev Brow, Chairperson Garage
